Crocheted...

With the colder months starting to settle in, it's now that time of year where beanies become part of our staple wardrobe items.

Last year, I whipped up a stack of cute little crocheted baby hats for Hannah.
Look at how little and cute she was a year ago!  Nawwwww!!!

No doubt I'll be doing the same again this year.

I crocheted this cute little hat for Hannah last week.

You could say it's a very improvised hat!  As per usual with me, I didn't bother with a pattern.  I just kind of made it up as I went along.

So considering that, I'd say it turned out quite nicely.

Last night I started working on another one.  This one, will be made taking ideas from a few crochet hat patterns that I have found in my travels of online tutorials & patterns.  I'm going to add ear flaps too.  I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Do you crochet?

Doing my bit...

On Thursday, here in 'The Land Down Under' people all over the country got together to raise money and awareness for a great cause.  The Cancer Council held their annual Australia's Biggest Morning Tea to help tip the balance in the fight against cancer.

In the last few years, I have lost a few of those dear to me to cancer and my step father is also currently going under the knife on a regular basis to remove the nasty skin cancers that keep popping up.  With this in mind, I knew I wanted to support in some way.

So this year I teamed up with a bunch of extremely beautiful & generous online businesses and donated one of my items to The Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Auction, hosted by the lovely Amanda from Tout Mon Amour.

This was my first time participating in an auction.  It was pretty exciting stuff!  You may have noticed me spamming facebook & twitter, trying to get the word out on Thursday.... I don't usually like to annoy people by innundating their walls with posts, but this was all for a very good reason... so I'm hoping that I've been excused just this once ;-)

I made this Vintage Fabric Beaded Necklace especially for the auction.  The winning bid went to a favourite sewing friend & follower of mine for $14.  So a big mention of thanks needs to go out to Kelly..... You have a wonderful rainbow heart my lovely!!!

All up the auction raised just over $3000!!!  That's such a fantastic effort!

To coincide with the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, Tout Mon Amour is also holding a giveaway over on the blog!  The prize is this adorable 'Tea For Me Too' child's tea set by Rosanna.  Why not pop on over here and take a look before the competition ends Tuesday!

Amanda really did such an awesome job putting together this auction.  I know that if she hosts it again next year, I'll be donating again for sure!

You don't have to wait until next years morning tea to donate....  You can do so at any time of the year, day or night by clicking here & visiting the Cancer Council Qld Website!

Scrappy Applique

If you follow Cass Can Sew via Facebook or Twitter, you may know that I've stopped procrastinating and finally started practising the art of Machine Appliqué.

Here's my first efforts...

I got a bit creative with my second effort...

I even whipped up a cute little skirt to match!

My circle work is still a bit wonky & in need of much improvement... but I'm sure we'll get there eventually, or I'll just appliqué everything in the shape of a square or rectangle!

I'm having a little bit of an issue with my stitches not coming out evenly the whole way around.  I would love to hear your advice on what I'm doing wrong.

If you are looking for a good tutorial on how to appliqué, Pam from Threading My Way has a really good one here

Are you learning any new techniques at the moment or do you procrastinate about trying out new things?

Small Fish in Big Ponds...

I'm feeling a bit disheartened about my leap into the world of Etsy with Roslyou Handmade.

I feel like a teeny tiny fish in a big, huge, massive pond... actually... Etsy is more like an ocean!

I'm getting a few looks and a few likes... a couple of 'favourites'... but so far have only had one sale.  A custom order for one of my beautiful blogging friends.

Please excuse the nudey Bratz Baby... hehehe!

So I've decided to bring things a little closer to home.

This week I have launched Rosylou Handmade on Facebook.  I'm hoping to have more luck here.  I'll be working hard getting the word out on a smaller, local scale.

So please pop over & say Hi and feel free to like and share the Rosylou Handmade Facebook page with everyone you know!

Do you have an online shop?  I'd love to hear your advice on your experiences!  I'd also love to check out what you have on offer.

Thifted - The Local Church Jumble Sale

The local church held it's annual Jumble Sale over the weekend.  When I saw the big sign hanging over the fence, I got all tingly with anticipation of all the vintage goodness I would be able to scour through!

When I think Church Jumble Sale, I think, pot plants, antique furniture, tons of Mills & Boon novels, knick-knacks, vinyl, lovingly handmade tea cosies, barbie toilet roll covers & those lacy knitted coat hangers.... All at original 1975 prices!!!

I know that you are all eager to cast your eyes over my treasures.... So I'll be quiet now and just upload the pics!

I remember having this butterfly coaster set in our house as a child.  My mum informed me yesterday that my Aunty had brought one of these back for us from her trip to Malaysia in the early 80's.  Considering the age and the fine work, it's in really good shape!  Only one of the butterflies has broken up a bit and there is one spot in the basket that has a tiny break.

Not quite Pyrex, but close enough!

Doilies, Lace Trim & Bias Binding

I behaved myself with this pattern haul!  There were so many more great vintage patterns that I could have taken home with me... but I'm trying to behave.  These were my top 10 picks, snapped up for a grand total of $4!!!

Here's a better look at some of my favourites...

I also managed to tick a few more of these Tijuana Brass beauties off my list...

I also came home with a stack of delightful tea cups that were sitting in a box, labelled "Free, take as many as you like".  I love signs like that!  I'll save them to share with you in another instalment of Thrifted.

Thrifted - Tips, Fabric & Vintage Pattern Heaven!

Hello there all my Nifty Thrifty readers!  Have you been on an Oppy Adventure this week?

A few lovely followers have asked me how I manage to come home with such great finds.  So I thought I'd share a few of my tips with you.

  • Try looking for smaller Op shops.  As we all know, the big oppy's/charities have become really over priced!  Although you can sometimes still snap up a nice little bargain, it's often cheaper now to buy a brand new shirt from a retailer than it is to purchase from a charity.  The two Op shops that I visit on a regular basis & always seem to come out with something great and at a reasonable thrifted price, are charities for animal welfare.
  • Small country town Oppy's are a treasure trove!  These quaint little op shops will almost always have much more vintage for you to drool over! And will be far less expensive!!!
  • I go straight to the crafting section.  But it all depends on what you're searching for.  Since I'm a sew-a-holic... the craft section is where I head to first up.  I look through all the patterns, you never know what's hiding unless you delve into it properly!  Then I search the fabrics, then I head to manchester and keep an eye out for lovely vintage sheets.  I also keep my eye out for clearance racks.... I often find really good re-fashioning finds there.  Also, (again, this is just my personal preference) I would feel lost if I didn't scour the vinyl box, searching for Tijuana Brass & the likes.  Before I leave I have a quick look through the plates and platters, searching for that perfect piece of Pyrex!
  • Get to know your local op shop volunteers.  They love to chat.  I've found that if I get chatting to them about sewing or vinyl, they sometimes will mention that they have something that you may be after at home and that they'll bring it in the next time they are rostered on.  They also sometimes have goodies waiting out the back, just waiting for you to snap up... so I often ask if they have any new items that I may like.
So there's a few little helpful hints from me.  I hope they are helpful on your next Oppy Adventure!  Do you have any more great advice to add to this?

So now it's time to share with you my lovely treasures!

This vintage jumper/pinafore pattern would have to be one of my best finds yet!  The illustration is just beautiful & what vintage is all about.  I tried to do a little research and this pattern seems to come from the early 1960's.  Sadly, not all of the pattern pieces were in the packet, but it was still magic to carefully open & unfold what pattern pieces that were there.  One bonus that I thought was cute, is the applique transfer that came with the pattern, unused.  Now I'm on the look out for the perfect frame so that I can let this live on as a piece of art in my sewing space.

Technically, these 3 Knitwit patterns weren't actually thrifted, but more so "gifted"... but I still wanted to share them with you.  These funky patterns were given to me from my Fathers' neighbour, Dianne.  Every now & then when Dad & his partner Carol pop in for a visit, they will come with a little parcel in hand care of Dianne.  She has passed on some lovely patterns, fabrics & notions to me that, as you well know, will be put to good use!
I'm just dying to have a go at making those retro pants on the right!

Another cute little find from my local oppy is this crossover pinny pattern.  All the pieces are included, along with some carbon tracing paper! Bonus!  Don't you just love the little ducky pockets!

I have to apologise for the grainy pic... but this week I managed to find these two fabrics.  The floral one is 3m of lovely peachy coloured cotton, perfect for a few little skirts & dresses. The other fabric is a nice lilac t-shirt knit fabric.  There's 3m of this fabric also!  I haven't quite decided what I will use it for yet, but the possibilities are endless!!!

I hope my tips help you on your own Oppy Adventures!  I love seeing other Thrifting Addicts' finds, so please feel free to say hi either here in the comments section, via Facebook, Twitter or email and show off what you have scored too!

Bonnets & Bunting - I've Been a Busy Bee!

It's been a really busy week here behind the scenes at Cass Can Sew!

There's been birthdays & the opening of my Etsy Shop Rosylou Handmade & learning how to Tweet, fabric shopping, lots & lots of time behind the machine creating pretty things for the shop, as well as all the general boring things I have to do as a Mummy!

Oh! Not to mention that I got these lovely swing tags in the mail today, all ready to be attached to my shop items (once I finally get a purchase!)

I thought I'd share with you a few lovely images of what I've been creating!

I discovered this week that Hannah does not make a good hat model.... and that oversized Bratz Baby dolls are much more cooperative!

So what's on my sewing to do list for this week?

I purchased some lovely pinwale cord this week with one of the Spotlight vouchers that I was gifted for my birthday.  So I'm hoping to find the time to make a little pinafore/jumper dress for Hannah with some of that fabric.  I'd also like to have a go at the serged bubble skirt!  It looks so quick and easy!

What are you sewing this week?
